Instead of building an entire museum based upon just My Neighbor Totoro, the Miyazaki Museum will showcase aspects of all of Hiyao Miyazaki’s work. I would like for this venue to be in Tokyo, Japan, where it will hidden from normal view. Instead of just having an entire building put together from the ground up, I want the museum to be installed in an office building, where you normally wouldn’t find a venue such as that. To the unsuspecting eye it will seem like just any other floor of the high rise until you actually wander inside and find yourself in a completely different world. Each area of the museum will focus on a different movie from the Miyazaki universe. So that you are aware that you are entering a new film related area each particular room there will be a huge diorama of sorts that depicts an important scene from the movie – a bit like the Museum of Natural History.
For the My Neighbor Totoro exhibition the display will be one of the first few scenes where Mei crawls through a thicket and finds Totoro on the other side sleeping beneath a huge camphor tree, so she climbs up onto his belly. Each exhibition will also have movie cels, storyboards, and a monitor that has a video of Mr. Miyazaki going over his work in his own words to give you a good idea of what he was thinking when he came up with each concept.
The Miyazaki Museum will also have eco-friendly features, because most of Hiyao’s films center around nature.
